The Best Way to Start in Corporate AV: A Journey of Learning and Leading
As someone deeply invested in the corporate AV world, I often find myself asking fellow techs, "How did you get your start in AV?"
The answers are always unique, reflecting the diverse paths to this dynamic industry.
My own journey began close to my 30s, a later start than many in this field. Despite this, thanks to invaluable mentors who accelerated my learning and leadership growth, I quickly found success, proving that it's never too late to embark on a new career path. But what if you're stepping into this field without a mentor?
🔍 Here's my starter guide for those new to AV, lacking contacts or experience:
- Reach Out to Local Hotels:
Start by contacting AV managers in hotels, especially those with external vendors. These venues are perfect for learning the ropes, from basic setups to room transformations (or 'room flips). Sometimes, you even get to work with experienced techs for more high-profile shows inside the hotel.
-Learn the Basics:
Hotel work will teach you everything from signal flow (audio, video, and lighting) to equipment setup. It might be daunting at first, but there's always a team member ready to help. 🛠️
-Expand and Excel:
As you prove your worth, doors to larger events and more diverse experiences will open. 🚪 If the AV department is an outside vendor, you could easily do more work outside the hotel.✨
The key to breaking into corporate AV is seizing every learning opportunity and growing your network. This path can lead to exciting work and travel opportunities. 🌍
